In this paper a novel approach to the power system stabilizers (PSS) parameter design is proposed, based on the frequency domain approach to the robust control design. Sufficient condition for robust stability of uncertain systems is given which underlies the proposed PSS design procedure. Its combination with the direct controller synthesis allows to incorporate performance requirements in the design.

The logic controller is a supervisory system which controls parallel and synchronized sequences of elementary operations in the controlled system. Even though logic controllers are very important in the process of control in the industry, there is not yet a standard integrated tool, which is sufficiently powerful, versatile and simple to use, and with which it is possible to carry out formal analysis of correctness. In this paper we will present statecharts as tool for modeling and control design of industrial processes, their analysis method and their transformation into ladder logic i.e. the language of programmable logic controllers.

Two specification tools for the discrete event dynamic systems (DEDS) are described in the paper. The first one is the finite automaton which represents the basic finite state machine from which many other tools are derived. The second and very often used nowadays is Petri net. Both tools are analyzed, compared and used for the DEDS control. Their use is illustrated on an practical example.

The paper describes genetic algorithms application for control system design and for dynamic system model identification. The approach is based on the search for the multivariable function global optimum with cost functions which consist of dynamic system simulation and integral performance criterion evaluation. The proposed methods are demonstrated on design examples of control structures under PID controllers for single input – single output (SISO) and multi input – multi output (MIMO) systems as well as on an example of a selftuning control structure for a 2x2 system. A real-time identification example is presented, too.

Fuzzy control is a dynamic developing area in the field of system science. This paper gives a short explanation of how fuzzy controllers work and an example of generating of fuzzy control rules based on the method of cell-to-cell mapping, which applies the possibility theory and the theory of graphs. Method of cell-to-cell mapping is used to propose a fuzzy logic controller for the chemical reactor.

The main objective of this paper is to point out the development of advance control methods and their applications in the industry. Multi-producers and multi-vendors market environment dealing with the control systems is today’s reality. In many European companies, control systems are built up stepwise in a non-homogeneous way. In such an environment the final system integration requires a considerable effort and diverse specific knowledge of all system components. The objective of this paper is to analyse the individual control methods and the possibility to their successful incorporation into integrate complex control systems.
